Fairy-tale spires, world-class beer, and medieval charm at every turn
Prague looks like it was designed by someone who read too many fairy tales — and that's exactly the point. The Charles Bridge at dawn, Prague Castle looming above the Vltava River, and the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square create a skyline that hasn't changed much in 600 years. But beyond the postcard views, Prague is absurdly affordable for a European capital. You'll eat well for $10, drink excellent Czech pilsner for $2, and find genuinely charming Airbnbs for under $60/night. The trick is venturing past Old Town into neighborhoods like Vinohrady and Zizkov where locals actually hang out.
Old Town (Stare Mesto) is the most convenient base but prices are 30-40% higher than surrounding areas. Vinohrady is the smart pick — trendy cafes, excellent restaurants, 10-minute tram to center, and hotels at $50-90/night. Zizkov offers the most character and cheapest accommodation. Mala Strana (below the castle) is beautiful but quieter at night.
Fly into Vaclav Havel Airport (PRG). Direct flights from NYC (JFK) run seasonally; otherwise connect through London, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam. Prague is also an easy train ride from Vienna (4hrs) or Berlin (4.5hrs). Book 4-6 weeks ahead. April-May and September-October offer perfect weather with thinner crowds than summer.
