Tango, steak, and European grandeur in the heart of South America
Buenos Aires feels like Paris and Rome had a child that grew up speaking Spanish and dancing tango. The architecture along Avenida de Mayo is stunningly European, the steak (particularly at old-school parrillas in San Telmo) is the best you'll eat anywhere, and the cultural scene — from the Teatro Colon opera house to La Boca's street art — runs deep. The city comes alive late: dinner starts at 10pm, milongas (tango halls) kick off at midnight, and the nightlife in Palermo runs until dawn. The exchange rate currently makes Buenos Aires exceptionally affordable for visitors — world-class dining for under $20.
Palermo (especially Palermo Soho and Hollywood) is the heart of BA's modern food and nightlife scene — hotels at $50-100/night, apartments from $400/month. Recoleta is elegant and polished, home to the famous cemetery and upscale dining. San Telmo is the bohemian choice — cobblestone streets, antique shops, and excellent value at $40-80/night. Microcentro is convenient but less charming.
Fly into Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) — about 45 minutes from the city center by taxi or shuttle. Direct flights from Miami, NYC, Houston, and Atlanta. Aerolinas Argentinas and American Airlines are the main carriers. Book 4-6 weeks ahead. October through April is the Southern Hemisphere's warm season — December-February is summer (hot, locals leave for beach holidays). March-May is gorgeous with autumn foliage.
